THE MAGIC FLUTE
Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder
Ohio University
Athens, Ohio
Thesis Paper Project 2004
The Magic Flute is traditionally done as a story of
good versus evil, with Sarastro being the personification of good and the
Queen of the Night being evil. Looking at the lyrics of the opera from
a modern, feminist perspective I felt that neither were wholly good or evil.
Both have good and bad aspects, but are fanatical about their beliefs.
Like any fanatic, they push their beliefs on the younger generation (Tamino
and Pamina). For me, it is an opera about the coming of age of this
younger generation and what they take from each parent figure and
incorporate into adult versions of themselves.
