FIRST HAND - THE SANTA FE OPERA
I have worked as a First Hand at the Santa Fe Opera for
three seasons. My responsibilities included assisting my draper in
fittings, cutting mock-ups and finished garments from my draper's patterns,
altering existing garments, stitching, and supervising the stitchers and
apprentices on our team.

Lucio Silla
Costume Design by Paul Brown
Draper: Deanna Serino
Each of the costumes for this opera was an
exaggerated version of 18th century silhouettes. |

The mandarins and lunar attendents were made of a
wide range of fabrics, all of which had to be appliqued in various ways. |

The basic peasant garments were
jobbed out, then we altered and tortured them into their final shapes.
I also made several new garments for them including the blue sash, red
vest, and blue undershirt. |

Don Giovanni
Costume Design by David Zinn
Draper: Erica Burds
Two of the principle characters we worked
on were Zerilena and Leporello. Zerilena's costume was an altered
and embellished vintage dress, with a vintage jacket that had to be
extensively altered to fit the petite singer. Leporello's suit
also had to have extensive fit alterations, and his vest was a new
build. We also altered and embellished existing garments for the
chorus. |

La
Sonnambula
Costume Design by Veronique Seymat
Draper: Erica Burds
The prologue of this production was set
about 1905. The lavendar dress was altered from a late 19th
century dress, while the plaid dress was designed and built for this
production. The challenge for the rest of the production was to
build new or transform basic period garments into Swiss folk costume,
like the brown bodice below that was altered from a 17th century piece. |

L'Italiana in Algeri
Costume Design by David Woolard
Draper: Rebecca Bernstein
The whimsical nature of this opera lent
itself to an incredibly fun costume design, including this vest made out
of a rug. This is by far one of the most challenging pieces that I
have ever helped to construct, due to the stiffness of the backing and
the deep nap. |

Remount of a San Francisco Opera
Production
Draper: Rebecca Bernstein
Two additional gowns had to be built to
work with the existing rental pieces. |
